Letter from CEO & Founder Stephen Thomas on Winning 2021 Mortgage Awards of Excellence for Commercial Mortgage Brokering

“I feel that my greatest achievement is ultimately measured by the positive impact I have had on my clients, my peers, and the industry as a whole.” – Stephen Thomas

To start and to say it is an honor to be the winner of such a large field of professionals would be an understatement. As someone who has enjoyed considerable success throughout their career, such acknowledgment is a reward in and of itself.

That said, when I think of success, I see it as a combination of the contribution you make to society and the value you bring to those you seek to serve – both borrowers and lenders.

In other words, success in helping others to achieve their goals is what enables you to contribute on a pay-it-forward basis.

During the height of the pandemic, I was able to close 60+ deals. Many of these transactions are challenging outside of a global pandemic. Despite the added challenge of providing our clients with exceptional service during a crisis, our business grew by 300 percent.  Our business growth during the pandemic was notable and helped our clients during a time they needed us most. This unwavering commitment to service and client diversity allowed us to seamlessly pivot to meet the changing demands of a market in flux and lead the commercial mortgage industry in 2020 and 2021.

Because of this success, I was afforded the great opportunity to extend the impact of our business to better serve the community through my endorsement of the Black North Initiative CEO pledge and my Brands for Canada fundraising initiative.

Championed by the Canadian Council of Business Leaders Against Anti-Black Systemic Racism, I am proud to say that HALO Advisory was the first in our industry to endorse and actively support the Black North initiative.

Meanwhile, through the Brands for Canada program, we raised $7.2 million, enabling us to help families in need to bring them above the poverty line – which is good for everyone. In addition to providing those in need with food and clothing through the general business community, we help them get out of poverty and mentor them to stay out of poverty through our entrepreneurial training program. Of course, I did not do this alone, as 1.2 million small business owners along with industry giants such as Gap, Levi’s, Proctor & Gamble played and continue to play a significant role in making the program a success.

Overall the above initiatives reflect my fervent commitment to serving my community and the fight to achieve racial equality, champion human rights, and support financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Ultimately, the continuing achievement of these goals transcends my accomplishments as the Top Commercial Mortgage Broker.

With the above in mind, as I reflect on what we achieved beyond our own success, I am both humbled and grateful that I am a part of something bigger than myself and, yes, even my company.

That said, perhaps the most satisfying achievement was creating a blueprint that anyone can follow to make the transition out of corporate Canada, residential mortgage brokering, or any unfulfilling environment to become a successful entrepreneur servicing the needs of elite clientele as a commercial mortgage broker.

In this regard, we are perhaps trailblazers, as many people tell me what I have accomplished has paved the way for the success of others. The way I look at it, by helping others create a sustainable business that will open the doors for them to move from corporate Canada or grow within the brokerage industry to pursue and achieve their dream of success as self-employed professionals are good for the industry as a whole.

Perhaps the best way to sum up my view of business and life is a famous quote from Albert Pike, who said, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

In the context of Pike’s words, I feel that my greatest achievement is ultimately measured by the positive impact I have had on my clients, my peers, and the industry as a whole.
